This is the latest update on Sharon, who is now nicknamed Abby, as of Dec 31: You may recall that Abby is the GGBR puppy who was susptected to have swimmer syndrome because she was unable to walk. She moved around at a fast speed by using her hind legs in a swimming motion. She also had no control of her bladder. It was determined that she was not a swimmer dog but rather had suffered a spinal injury. She is still unable to walk and cannot control her urination. She continues to be a very happy lively puppy who is receiving the best of care in her foster home. Little Miss Abby, who is almost 30 pounds now, is going to be a big girl as evidenced by the size of her paws...they are already larger that those of the adult basset in the home. She is getting more movement in her legs and the PT is helping to strengthen them, but she seems to have no interest in learning how to walk at this point. She now has a wheelchair and so far this fiesty pup is resisting being in it. Currently she is put in the wheelchair by her foster parent who bounces Abby's back end to get her used to it, and also moves it a little to try to get her legs to move like she is walking. The PT has recommended a treadmill that also can be used to try to get her to walk. Between the PT and acupuncture, everything possible is being done to assist Abby toward walking. She is one stubborn little girl (typical basset ?!) and hopefully as she becomes a little older, she will start to be more motivated to walk.
